Paid attendance dropped 22 percent but total attendance was more than 300,000, despite eight days of rain during the 11-day 1991 Utah State Fair, Director Jackie Nokes says.

Total attendance was about 379,000 during the 1990 fair. The 1991 fair ran from Sept. 5-15.Officials budgeted $1.4 million for the fair and received $1.3 million, which is about 10.75 percent below the amount they expected to receive, Nokes said.

"We had to close the fair on the first Sunday night at 8 p.m. (because of rain). We were literally flooded out." Rain and lightning caused concern for safety of people and equipment, Nokes said.

"We asked people to leave but they were good sports. I didn't hear anyone complain," Nokes said. All pre-sold tickets (totaling about $8,000) for the Mary-Chapin Carpenter concert have been refunded, she said.
