"The Fisher King" was the nation's favorite film for the third straight week. The story of the Holy Grail and the homeless edged the police drama "Ricochet."

Meanwhile, Jodie Foster's directorial debut "Little Man Tate" opened to robust business in a handful of theaters. But Ken Wahl's "The Taking of Beverly Hills" took in almost no one.According to figures released by Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc., "The Fisher King" grossed $4.5 million for the top spot. Starring Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges, the film has made $22.4 million to date. "Ricochet," pairing Denzel Washington and John Lithgow, earned $4.4 million for second.

Among the week's premieres, "Frankie and Johnnie," the filmic adaptation of Terrence McNally's play featuring Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer, came in third. It made $4.3 million. "Ernest Scared Stupid" debuted to less-than-earnest sales of $4 million, and the new Tom Berenger "Shattered" didn't break any records in sixth, opening to mediocre receipts of $3.1 million.

"Little Man Tate," Foster's account of a child genius, collected $187,634 while playing on just seven screens, good for $26,805 per venue. "The Taking of Beverly Hills," on the other hand, made $462,424 while showing on 541 screens - just $855 per venue.
