Without fanfare, the Utah Department of Employment Security has moved into its new office at 140 E. 300 South, giving administrator Floyd Astin a chance to consolidate his operation for the first time in many years.

The department closed its administrative office after 30 years at 174 Social Hall Ave. and its local Job Service office at 1234 S. Main. Some administrative functions were moved from that latter location to the new building. As part of the $21 million project to consolidate the department's functions, new public offices have been opened at 5735 S. Redwood Road and 720 S. 200 East.

Astin's new building has six floors of office space and two floors of underground parking for the 300 employees. Visitors using the building must park on a lot south of the structure. It has a two-toned exterior, one to match the City Centre Building and the other to match the Heber M. Wells Office Building, both located on the same block.

The contractor was Big D Construction and Andrew Ramsey of Brixen & Christopher Architects was the designer.
