A Provo woman is in serious condition and her newborn baby girl in satisfactory condition at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center following a multiple-car accident on University Avenue Monday afternoon.
Raymond Downey, 79, Moroni, was northbound on University Avenue when he attempted to make a left turn onto 1230 North, according to Police Cpl. Brian Nichols.Downey's vehicle was struck by a car driven by Monte Bolton, 27, Provo, who was southbound on University Avenue. His wife, Julie, 28, was a passenger in the car. She was 7 1/2 months pregnant.The force of the collision pushed Downey's car into a pickup owned by Marty Reynolds. Reynolds was in the eastbound turn lane on 1230 North, waiting for a green light.
Bolton's vehicle was then rear-ended by a Jeep driven by Jeffrey Miller, 24, Provo. The force of the multiple collisions caused Julie Bolton's placenta to rupture.
Provo paramedics transported Julie Bolton to Utah Valley Medical Center, where she underwent an emergency Caesarean section. She also suffered a fractured right ankle in the accident.
Monte Bolton was treated for head lacerations at the hospital and released. Neither of the other two drivers was injured. A passenger in the Downey vehicle was treated at the scene.
The Bolton and Downey vehicles were totaled, Nichols said. The other two vehicles received minor damage. The accident is still under investigation.
