A death row inmate scheduled to die by injection shortly after midnight for arranging a contract murder through Soldier of Fortune magazine was spared late Tuesday by a last-minute appeals court stay.

Robert Black, 44, told prison authorities earlier in the day he was willing to go through with the execution. He decided to drop his appeals after the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin earlier refused to grant him a stay.
