Villagers in Uttarkashi in northwestern India work Tuesday to free a cow trapped by Sunday's powerful earthquake. Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao toured the earthquake-damaged areas Wednesday, and relief efforts continued in the region amid reports that the death toll from the disaster had reached 1,000. Rao met with Uttar Pradesh state Chief Minister Kalyan Singh and pledged about $320,000 from the prime minister's relief fund to the victims.
