A 10.5 percent increase in full-time enrollment set the pace for fall quarter at Southern Utah University.

With enrollment figures for fall quarter nearly finalized, the total head count is nearly 4,300, an increase of 8 percent above that of fall quarter in 1990. And, according to D. Mark Barton, director of admissions, the number of students signing up for 15 or more credit hours is up by 328, or 10.5 percent.Out of a total enrollment, the full-time (FTE) students, for budget-related purposes, now account for more than 3,500 of that number, or about 93 percent.

"This is probably the highest ratio of FTE to total head count in the state's universities," Barton said.

The largest enrollment increase was in the number of new freshmen, which went from about 700 in 1990 to about 900 this year. Despite the hiring of additional faculty, the number of students in classes versus the number of students the classes are geared to handle is approaching 100 percent, Barton said, meaning that professors have taken the initiative in allowing more students into their classes in some cases than they have desks for.
