The City Council appointed Donald J. Butler Tuesday evening to fill the council seat vacated by the death of Ron Last.

Butler, vice president of Jones Paint and Glass Co., was sworn in during Tuesday's council meeting by City Recorder Marilyn Perry. Butler was among 13 applicants for the position. Last died of heart failure Sept. 27."As a 25-year resident of Provo, I feel very fortunate to serve the city," he said. "I will do my very best to make fair decisions based on the information I have and that's about all I can promise."

Council members praised Last for the service he rendered, saying it was difficult and challenging to replace him.

The new council member is chairman of the citizens advisory board of the Youth Detention Center and a Planned Giving board member at Utah Valley Community College.

Butler was among six finalists interviewed by the council during a closed-door meeting Tuesday.
