A 46,000-square-foot Toys R Us outlet at 2210 S. 1300 East in Sugar House is nearing completion, and the company said the store will open in time for the Christmas shopping season.
Gary Gilliard, general manager of the national retailer's Utah-Colorado division, said the store will create 55 to 85 year-round jobs and 100 to 275 jobs during the Christmas buying season.The Paramus, N.J., retailer, which commands 25 percent of the U.S. toy market, said it will hold a "Parade of Stars Character Event" at the store on Nov. 16. Company mascot Geoffrey Giraffe will be on hand along with Bonk, Barbie, a Cabbage Patch Kid and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Free gifts will be given to children.
The store will be the third Toys R Us in the Salt Lake area. Others are in Murray and West Valley City. The company operates 451 Toys R Us stores nationwide and 97 in other countries. It also operates 167 Kids R Us clothing stores in the United States.
The Fortune 500 company reported net sales for the 1991 fiscal year ended last February of $5.1 billion, up 15.1 percent over the previous year. The company said some 1 million customers walk through its doors each week.
