CARD MAY END MAD DASH TO PARKING METER

SHARE CARD MAY END MAD DASH TO PARKING METER

Starting Thursday, motorists can reach for the dash instead of dashing for the meter. The city parking department is selling in-car parking meters that take an electronic card, not coins.

"We see this as a service that allows greater flexibility because you don't have to keep running out to the meter." said Frans van Beveren, who runs the parking department. The portable meters, displayed on the dashboard, take microchip-carrying cards. When the card is inserted, time ticks away on a liquid crystal display visible to the parking police.

A meter costs $130. Cards, good for 50 hours of parking, sell for $52 apiece.
