Groundbreaking ceremonies for an expansion of the Missionary Training Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were scheduled to take place at 3 p.m. Thursday.

President Gordon B. Hinckley, first counselor in the church's First Presidency, presided over and spoke at the ceremonies. Brigham Young University President Rex E. Lee also spoke.Expansion plans call for a new multipurpose building for orientation meetings and devotionals, a four-story residence hall, a four-story classroom building and a new entrance to the overall training complex.

The additions will enable the center to increase its capacity from 3,000 to 4,000 missionaries. Preliminary work on additional parking capacity began during the summer.

The church has some 45,000 missionaries serving throughout the world. There are 13 other smaller training centers.
