The union representing 4,300 nurses at six hospitals and 48 other health facilities run by Los Angeles County went on strike overnight after contract talks failed.

The walkout began at 11 p.m. Monday during hospital shift changes, said Dan Savage, spokesman for the Service Employees International Union Local 660.Roughly one-third of the nurses scheduled for overnight shifts at some hospitals were absent.

Irving Cohen, director of administration and finance for the county Health Services Department, said hospitals probably would not feel the full impact until later in the day because evening nurses would be asked to stay on the job.
