The open seat on the City Council created by the untimely death of Councilman Ron Last will be filled Oct. 22.
According to state law, the remaining council members must appoint a new member by majority vote within 30 days of the vacancy. Last died of a heart attack Sept. 27 after a fall while working on his cabin at Timberlake Estates near Heber City.Applications for the position will be accepted at the city recorder's office until noon Oct. 15. The council will interview candidates, who must live in the northeast council district, and make its selection one week later. The new member will be sworn in at the Oct. 29 council meeting.
Although the law states that appointees shall fill unexpired terms until the next municipal election, City Attorney Gary Gregerson said it's too late for that this year. Candidates for City Council must file for office six Tuesdays prior to the primary election, according to the law. The filing deadline was Aug. 27.
That means the new appointee will fill the remaining two years of Last's term. The next municipal election is scheduled for 1993.
