After three weeks, police still have no leads to who stole Sun Valley resident Gretchen Fraser's gold and silver Olympic medals on display at the Sun Valley Lodge.
Even the promise of a $10,000 reward has produced no clues to the whereabouts of the medals, which Fraser won at the 1948 Winter Games in St. Moritz, Switzerland. They were the first U.S. medals ever won in skiing.Police made wax impressions of the medals, which were painted gold and silver and photographed for distribution to Olympic memorabilia collectors throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.
"Since we don't have any leads on how to solve the crime, we're concentrating on getting the word out," Sun Valley Police Chief Cam Daggett said Friday.
Because of the high visibility and value of the medals, police believe the thief may go underground for a time before trying to sell them.
Because five weeks passed from the time the medals are believed to have been taken and when they were discovered missing Oct. 6, no physical evidence exists to trace the culprit, Daggett said.
