Disgruntled shortstop Kurt Stillwell filed for free agency Tuesday.

Stillwell, 26, lost his starting job along with third baseman Kevin Seitzer in May when Hal McRae succeeded John Wathan as manager.Stillwell regained the job for the finals 11/2 months of the season when rookie David Howard, trying to make the jump from the Royals' Class AA team in Memphis, did not produce offensively.

Stillwell hit .265 with six home runs and 51 RBIs last season. He has had defensive problems, primarily with his inconsistent arm.

  1. Fewer comments automatically sent to moderation (we hope).
  2. Lower tolerance for uncivil comments. If you encounter a warning that your comment will be sent to moderation, try revising before you submit for the best chance of approval.
