The mayor of Waterbury and seven political associates pleaded not guilty to a long list of federal corruption and income tax evasion charges at their arraignment Friday.
A 29-count indictment handed up last week charged Mayor Joseph J. Santopietro with taking $170,000 in kickbacks from developers, including a $25,000 "reward" for diverting $1 million in city pension money into investments with the troubled Colonial Realty Co.A state agency also is investigating.
