The Chicago teachers union overwhelmingly approved a tentative contract mediated by Mayor Richard M. Daley, averting a strike Monday in the nation's third-largest school district.

Union delegates voted 518-43 Sunday to recommend teachers approve the settlement.The pact will give the 26,000 teachers a 3 percent raise in February and a 7 percent raise in 1993.
