Federal officials announced plans Friday aimed at curtailing fraud and abuse among suppliers of wheelchairs, crutches and other medical equipment to Medicare beneficiaries.

Medicare spends more than $2 billion a year on home medical equipment. The regulations and legislation proposed by the Department of Health and Human Services would save an estimated $95 million next fiscal year.Department officials cited instances in which Medicare was billed several hundred dollars for devices that cost only a few dollars to make.
