Ballet West and Soviet dancers Anatoli Kucheruk and Marina Nudga have resolved the dispute arising from the company's releasing the dancers from contract last August. The pair received a financial settlement in recognition of their original commitment to Ballet West.
Both parties expressed respect for each other and regret for the unfavorable statements reported publicly at the time the difference arose. "The settlement we finally agreed upon was very close to what we offered them in the first place," said Susan Barrell, executive director of Ballet West.Artistic director John Hart emphasized his recognition of Kucheruk's technical virtuosity, his respect for the artistic talents of both Kucheruk and Nudga and his regret that differing artistic needs preclude their remaining with Ballet West.
The dancers plan to remain in the Salt Lake area and perform independently for the remainder of this season. They are considering a number of invitations to perform with American ballet companies and will dance "Nutcracker" with the San Diego Ballet.
Kucheruk and Nudga performed for many years as principal dancer and soloist with Bolshoi and Kiev ballets to critical acclaim. Ballet West wishes them continued success, said Barrell.
