Residents of Alta have elected Tom Pollard and Jared Higgins to represent them on the Town Council.

Pollard, the only incumbent running, and Higgins both captured 30 percent of the vote. Defeated in the race were Michel Weekley, 24 percent, and Paul Huber, 17 percent. All of the candidates were concerned about controlling development in the small, mountain ski town. How and where development - both commercial and residential - should occur was the biggest issue for all candidates.

Pollard, 32, said he'd been working as a council member to keep Alta small.

"I'm concerned about what I can do to keep Alta the small, beautiful mountain town that it is," he said.

Pollard is married and a hotel general manager in Alta. He graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in accounting.

Higgins, 37, is married and has lived in Alta for eight years. He is a dispatcher for Alta Central and attended the University of Utah for three years. Besides controlling growth, Higgins was concerned with maintaining a tight budget.

"We have so much litigation from zoning and planning that it eats up our budget," he said.
