A Pleasant Grove man was killed Tuesday evening when a runaway rail car ran into his automobile.
Killed in the accident was:Brent Bowman, 39.
Pleasant Grove Police Lt. Tom Paul said the single rail car had been unhooked in American Fork waiting for the engine car to be replaced. It came loose and started to roll toward Pleasant Grove.
It was going about 25 to 30 mph when it reached the intersection of 600 West and Center Street. A car driven by Bowman was turning left going north on 600 West. The train collided with Bowman's car, pushed the vehicle out of the way and continued rolling. It was finally stopped at Geneva Steel. The rail car rolled a total of six miles.
Bowman was pronounced dead at the American Fork Hospital.
Investigation is continuing. "There is some concern that kids may have released the brake on the train car," said Paul.
