A lot of hard work and door-to-door campaigning paid off as Highland's People's Party swept Tuesday's election.

Unofficial results show 65 percent of Highland voters elected Brent Cook, 31, Ron L. Spence, 42, and Glen S. Thurgood, 52, to the City Council."That is an overwhelming majority," Spence said. "It was about what we anticipated."

Spence, president and CEO of Synergy marketing and telelectronics, said his next step is to implement a party platform that calls for commercial development of a grocery store.

"(The election) reflects the feeling of the people who favor a change of leadership in the community," Thurgood said.

"We're thrilled about the results. It is the result of the hard work of a lot of people," Thurgood said.

Cook had a more conservative response to the election:

"I'm delighted that the citizens of Highland made their wishes known. I think the development of a commercialization is definitely an issue that Highland needs to pursue. We are in desperate need of the services of a grocery store as well as the tax base it will create."
