Stella Welsh swept to victory over Joyce Johnson in the Orem mayoral race, becoming the first woman ever elected to the seat in the city's history.

Welsh beat Johnson by a solid 11-point margin, capturing 55 percent of the vote. Unofficial results showed Welsh with 6,577 votes and Johnson with 5,168 votes.Welsh attributed her come-from-behind win to a strong grass-roots campaign and residents' desire for strong leadership.

One incumbent councilman and two political newcomers will join Welsh with new terms on the council. Incumbent Kelvin C. Clayton, Judy Bell and Steven L. Heinz won four-year terms.

Incumbents Lucile M. Steele and Norman K. "Woody" Woodhouse lost re-election bids in the four-year term race. Challenger Paul V. Washburn also fell short in his election bid.

W. Chris Yandow repeated his primary election performance by soundly beating Clyde E. Weeks and write-in candidate George Bailey for the two-year council term.
