Officials and residents in Piute and Garfield counties are looking at the formation of a new water conservancy district.
"Purpose of the organization is to have an entity for water stockholders to deal with CUP (Central Utah Project) when the project is to a point that water will become available to this area," said Piute County Commission Chairman Afton Blood.Organization of the district must be approved by the 6th District Court. A hearing has been tentatively scheduled for Jan. 2 at 11 a.m. in Panguitch before Judge Don V. Tibbs.
The group has funding from the CUP for its organization, to be named Upper Sevier River Water Conservancy District, said Garfield County Commission Chairman Tom Hatch, a CUP board member.
Blood said the district will include all areas of the Sevier River drainage in the two counties. That will encompass all of Piute County and most of Garfield County.
