To the editor:

I am writing in response to a recent article about a mother who is suing the state of Utah for $10 million over the death of her son in an auto accident she says was the state's fault because of the poor design and condition of the highway. While I feel she may have a point as to the cause or rather the responsibility of the accident, I have a problem accepting the possibility that she will be entitled to keep $10 million of the taxpayers' money.

The money would be better spent going toward correcting the cause of the problem rather than into someone's pocket. A gain of $10 million to be spent on road improvements and maintenance could help prevent somebody else from being victimized, while a loss to the state of Utah of $10 million will only make the problems worse for everybody in the future who drives our highways, since the state will be out that much money without getting anything in return.
