Chase N. Peterson was given the title of University of Utah president emeritus Monday.
The U. Board of Trustees, in its monthly meeting, granted the rank to Peterson, who served at the U.'s helm from 1983 until June 30, 1991.The title is traditionally given to presidents when they leave their U. positions. Three former U. presidents - Alfred C. Emery, James C. Fletcher and David P. Gardner - currently hold the president emeritus rank.
"In view of Chase Peterson's distinguished service to the university, I consider it fitting that the title be bestowed upon him," said U. President Arthur K. Smith.
Smith also said it is possible for Peterson to be both president emeritus and clinical professor of internal medicine, the position he now holds in the U. School of Medicine.
