A burglar was caught red-handed Sunday trying to steal two ties, two screwdrivers, assorted office supplies - and a severed finger.
A Salt Lake attorney unlocked the door of a law office at 8 E. Broadway (300 South) about 4:30 p.m. Sunday and discovered a 65-year-old man rummaging through a co-worker's desk. The attorney then called his co-worker - who is also an attorney - and told him about the the man in his office. The co-worker and a police officer arrived shortly thereafter. The officer went to the office and met the suspect as he walked out of the office carrying a black bag. The suspect said, "See ya," and walked toward the officer and the attorney whose office it was, a Salt Lake police report states.
The officer stopped the man and discovered a bag full of various items from the office worth about $120. The man was also carrying a severed human finger in a jar of alcohol, according to the report.
The finger was identified as evidence in a medical malpractice lawsuit. Police took photographs of the finger and the other items before returning them.
Police said the suspect appeared to be a little "unstable." The suspect - a transient - was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of burglary.
