The islanders of American and Western Samoa emerged from shelters Wednesday to view the devastation caused by Cyclone Val, which killed seven people and is now threatening other South Pacific islands.

The seven were killed during 72 hours of 160-mile-per-hour winds that left thousands homeless and wiped out up to 80 percent of crops, New Zealand officials said.
