Salt Lake attorney Robert B. Lence has joined Huntsman Chemical Corp. as a senior vice president and general counsel.

Lence replaces Brent D. Ward, who has announced he is acandidate for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Jake Garn. Ward will now devote himself full time to the political campaign.

"Ward . . . has made a significant contribution to our company and will be missed," Jon M. Huntsman, chairman, and Ronald A. Rasband, president, said in a joint statement. They said Lence is familiar with Huntsman Chemical and has handled many of the company's legal matters over the past seven years that he has been with the law firm Van Cott, Bagley, Cornwall & McCarthy.

A Utah native, Lence graduated from Stanford University in 1979 with honors. In 1982, he received a law degree from the University of Southern California where he served as editor of the Southern California Law Review.

He has served as legal counsel and adviser to Tommorow, Today Inc., a non-profit organization that granted wishes of terminally ill children.

Lence and his wife, Anne Marie, are the parents of three children.
