Heisman Trophy winners Steve Owens and Pat Sullivan were among 15 former players and coaches inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Owens won the 1969 award as a running back at Oklahoma and Sullivan captured the 1971 award as a quarterback at Auburn.

Other former players inducted into the Hall of Fame were: Hub Bechtol of Texas, Bobby Bell of Minnesota, Fred Biletnikoff of Florida State, Kenny Easley of UCLA, L. Parker Hall of Mississippi, Alex Karras of Iowa, Ed Marinaro of Cornell, George Savitsky of Pennsylvania, James Stillwagon of Ohio State and Wayne Meylan of Nebraska.Former coaches inducted were: Dave Maurer of Wittenberg, Tommy Prothro of Oregon State and UCLA and Allyn McKeen of Memphis State and Mississippi State.
