To the editor:

As a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, I have observed some interesting campaigning techniques. One of those is done by Rep. Wayne Owens.First, I compliment him on the fact that he tries to keep the people apprised of what he is doing for the state of Utah and its people. He does this periodically by sending material through the Postal Service.

Mr. Owens is not alone in this practice, and we at the Postal Service appreciate the additional revenue that this creates. Of course, everyone is aware that this service is paid for by tax dollars.

The interesting thing about Mr. Owens is that when he sends his mailer to us for delivery each piece of mail is addressed to a specific customer. A husband, a wife and a child or two can all get the same exact bulletin. Frequently overtime is used in sorting Mr. Owens' mailers.

But when our other politicians send out fliers, they are not addressed to a specific person and there is only one per household. This practice saves tax dollars and does not require the mail carrier to sort each piece of mail before leaving the office to deliver the mail. Who knows, it might even save a tree or two.

I make reference to a campaign technique because that can be the only explanation to naming and addressing each individual that is of voting age. I guess Mr. Owens believes that by addressing each individual of the family, we will think that maybe he personally knows each of us. I don't think he is fooling anybody.
