Utah Republican leaders have tentatively chosen Ogden as the site of the party's state convention next year.

The party plans to stage the convention June 26-27 at the Weber County Fairgrounds and Golden Spike Coliseum if the site is found to be suitable for the event and financial terms can be arranged, state GOP Chairman Bruce Hough said. The Salt Palace in Salt Lake City is available if the Ogden site does not work out, Hough said.

The Republican Central Committee last weekend chose to have the convention in Ogden, in part to reward Republicans in the 1st Congressional District for their high voter turnout rate - the best among the three congressional districts.

The convention would attract 3,000 to 4,000 people, including 2,500 delegates who would have the opportunity to select the party's candidates in several contested races, including those for governor and U.S. Senate.
