Weber State University is publishing a new magazine for alumni, donors, faculty and staff.
The publication, called University Times, will be distributed to some 38,000 readers in a four-county area adjacent to Ogden and in U.S. cities where alumni live.University Times contains 40 pages of news, feature stories and occasional advertisements placed to underwrite publication costs. The magazine replaces the Comment, the official alumni newspaper published since 1972.
"A university of this size and quality deserves a publication that accurately reflects its status," said William C. Loos, vice president for advancement. "Our hope is that this magazine will show what Weber State is all about."
The inaugural issue of University Times features a cover story about Tom Welch, a Weber State alumnus who is leading Utah's campaign for the Winter Olympic Games. Welch served as student body president at Weber State in 1968 and as chairman of the alumni board in 1984.
University Times also includes a profile of Thomas R. Grimm, a Weber State alumnus who founded the Price Savers chain of wholesale stores.
Loos said he hopes to publish University Times twice a year if enough advertising can be attracted to support the publication.
University Times was conceived and edited by Ronald D. Cantera, director of public communications, and Craig V. Nelson, publications coordinator. It was designed by Richards & Swensen of Salt Lake City and printed by Watkins Printing of Providence.
