Egg zappers, beware.
Doctors from two countries warn that using microwave ovens to cook eggs, especially in their shells, can produce explosive results when the eggs are removed from the oven. Two young women suffered eye burns from eggs that exploded after being microwaved out of their shells for one minute at full power, Dr. J. Singh of the Birmingham and Midland Eye Hospital in England said in a letter in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.
A patient of Dr. Geoffrey E. Bradford and Robert A. Burnstine of Children's Hospital Medical Center in Akron, Ohio had an even more spectacular accident involving eggs microwaved in the shell. He suffered burns to his eyes, nose and forehead when six eggs exploded almost simultaneously after he took them from the oven.
All three patients recovered without lasting problems.
The doctors recommended that people pierce the yolk with a pin before microwaving eggs.
