When Barry P. Welch received his medical degree recently, he became the fourth son of Dr. Scott M. and Kathleen Peterson Welch to become a doctor. The father is a dental surgeon, and the second, third and fourth sons, Scott P., Brad and Greg, are dentists. The family's oldest son has a master's in business administration.
Archery champion\ MONTCLAIR, VA.
Daniel Ray Leiniger, 10, placed second in the Virginia State Outdoor Archery Championships (Cub Freestyle Division) held recently in Roanoke, Va. Prior to the state tournament, he competed in the National Field Archery Association Outdoor Championship Match and placed third to receive a bronze medal in the cub division (under 12). He is also the current defending Mid-Atlantic Cub Champion. Daniel is a member of the Quantico Ward in the Fredericksburg Virginia Stake.
Most valuable player\ WEST VALLEY CITY, UTAH
Brandon Tuft, 14, of the Sunnyvale Ward, Salt Lake Granger South Stake, was named most valuable player after participating in the College of Eastern Utah summer basketball camp. As a freshman, he played on the East High School sophomore team against 10 different high schools throughout Utah. The team won the tournament.
Represents Arizona\ MESA, ARIZ.\ Dannis Shepherd will represent Arizona in the 1992 Miss U.S.A. Pageant in February. She is a recent graduate of Arizona State University where she attended on a full academic scholarship. She currently has an internship at a local television station, and also works with more than 100 students in her dance studio. Jerry Jeremy, a member of the Mt. Rose 6th Ward, Reno Nevada Stake, was honored recently at the Nevada State Fair as one of eight northern Nevadans named the "Most Admired Senior Citizen." Brother Jeremy, 74, works for the United States Department of Commerce International Trade Administration as the district director for Nevada. He is also a nationally ranked senior tennis player.
Young woman of year\ FRESNO, CALIF.
Tiffany Stoker, 17, a senior at Clovis West High School, has been named the California Young Woman of the Year, receiving more than $13,000 in scholarships. She will compete for the national title next summer in Mobile, Ala. In the 35 years of the program, she is the first participant to win in all six categories - distinguished service, creative and performing arts, fitness, presence and composure, personal interview and scholastic achievement. She is a member of the Clovis 5th Ward, Fresno California Stake, where her father is bishop.
Scout honored\ LEBANON, IND.
John Meranda, 13, traveled to San Francisco, Calif., recently to be honored for heroism by the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies. The association presented him the distinguished citizen award for his courage and quick thinking in saving an infant who had stopped breathing. Although he was not trained in CPR, he used procedures he learned as a Boy Scout to restore the breathing of Ashley Griffin after she suffered a seizure. He was delivering newspapers when he heard the infant's mother yell for help. John is a member of the Frankfort Ward, Lafayette Indiana Stake.
Attends congress\ HONOLULU, HAWAII
Tami Lim of the Makiki Ward, Honolulu Hawaii Stake, represented the youth of Hawaii at the Hugh O'Brian Youth Foundation International World Leadership Congress in Chicago, Ill. She received the honor for her outstanding leadership and example while attending the Hawaii Ambassadors International Leadership Seminar. Youth attending the leadership congress represented 50 states, the District of Columbia, and more than 28 other countries. She is junior class president at her high school.
Top homemakers\ ST. LOUIS, MO.
Joan Galbasini and Susan Anderson have been honored as Fulltime Homemakers of the Year by Eagle Forum for their respective states. Sister Galbasini, Payson 16th Ward, Payson Utah Stake, was named Utah's Fulltime Homemaker of the Year, and Sister Anderson, Normal 1st Ward, Peoria Illinois Stake, was named Illinois' Fulltime Homemaker of the Year. Eagle Forum is a national pro-family organization. The Fulltime Homemaker Awards honor women who choose the traditional role of homemakers. The awards were given at a national convention in St. Louis.
Sets records\ BATON ROUGE, LA.
At the 1991 Junior National Swimming Championships, Clayton Smith set three individual state records in the 100 meter and 200 meter breaststroke and the 200 meter medley. He also swam on a relay team that set four state records. The relay time for the medley event qualified as the second fastest time in the nation for his age group. He is a member of the Baton Rouge 2nd Ward, Baton Rouge Louisiana Stake. Clayton, 14, hopes to compete in the 1996 or 2000 Olympics.
Little League mother\ MERIDIAN, IDAHO\ Tammy Cluff, ward librarian in the Meridian 16th Ward, Meridian Idaho South Stake, was selected as Regional Little League 1991 Mother of the Year. She traveled to New York City where she competed with three other regional winners for the World Series title. She placed second in that competition. She was nominated by her sons for her efforts in recruiting players, parents, coaches and sponsors for a league that provides an opportunity for physically and mentally challenged youth to participate in the Little League baseball program.

James Hargis, 17, placed second in architectural design in the High School Architectural Drafting contest sponsored by the National Association of Women in Construction in the Pomona Valley Region. He is in the Diamond Bar 1st Ward in the Chino California Stake.
First president\ YUKON, OKLA.
Roger W. Brox of the Mustang Ward, Oklahoma City Oklahoma South Stake, has been installed as the first president of the student division of the Oklahoma State Association of Licensed Practical Nurses, Inc. This is the first student division of its kind in the United States and is affiliated with the National Federation of Licensed Practical Nurses, Inc. He serves as stake Sunday School president.

BELOIT, WIS.
A composition written by Crawford Gates recently premiered at the Edvard Grieg Hall in Bergen, Norway. The work was a new anthem for the International Esperanto Congress and premiered before the International Esperanto Conference of 2,000 delegates from throughout the world. Its premiere was performed by a 60-voice chorus made up of singers from 57 countries, conducted by Dimitar Terziev from Sofia, Bulgaria, with soprano soloist Galina Feodorovna from Moscow. Brother Gates, a member of the Beloit Ward, Madison Wisconsin Stake, attended the premiere. He is composer and conductor of the Beloit Janesville Symphony Orchestra.

Chad Deshler, 11, a members of the Overland Park 1st Ward, Olathe Kansas Stake, was one of five players selected to the National All-Star Team at the National Indoor Soccer Championship, held in Oklahoma City, Okla. He was also chosen as the most valuable player for the tournament.
