Scott Norwood, one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history, will always be remembered for the kick he missed.
That came in the Super Bowl last Jan. 27 when he misfired on a 47-yard effort in the closing seconds which, if successful, would have made him a hero. Instead, the New York Giants beat the Buffalo Bills 20-19.Norwood had what he called an even tougher day Sunday, failing on three field goals and a conversion in the final 171/2 minutes of regulation.
However, thanks to Buffalo's relentless offense, he got one more chance - and made the most of it, kicking a 42-yard field goal at 2:34 of overtime to give the Bills a 30-27 victory over the Los Angeles Raiders."This was the toughest day in my career," said Norwood, in his seventh season with the Bills. "In spite of it all, the game had a happy ending. The bottom line is, we won.
"The field was in fine shape. My attitude was positive all day, I just didn't have a feel for it. My body just did not react positively."
After Mark Kelso intercepted a long pass by Jay Schroeder on the second play of overtime at the Buffalo 36, the Bills moved 40 yards on five plays for the winning points, disappointing the crowd of 85,081 at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
The big play of the drive was a 31-yard pass from Jim Kelly to Andre Reed. After three runs by Thurman Thomas gained nine yards, Norwood finally made a kick.
"I just tried to put the past out of my mind," Norwood said.
The Bills forced the overtime by scoring twice late in the fourth period - on the touchdown by Davis and on a 9-yard pass from Kelly to James Lofton with one minute left.
