It was get-even night for the Buffalo Sabres . . . but still a winning night for the Calgary Flames.

"The league and Buffalo should be embarrassed by what happened," Calgary coach Doug Risebrough said after a marathon, fight-filled 4-2 victory over the Sabres Sunday night.Risebrough was upset, but apparently not as much as the Sabres were when Calgary's Jamie Macoun broke Pat LaFontaine's jaw with a high-sticking incident in a game Nov. 16. Macoun received a major and an automatic game misconduct but the NHL later ruled that no further punishment would be handed down.

That incident apparently sparked Sunday night's feud in Buffalo.

The fight erupted at the Calgary bench while both teams were making line changes at 17:34 of the first period. By the time order had been restored and referee Don Koharski had sorted out all the penalties, 10 players were ejected - five from each side.

"It built and built, then I saw Jamie Macoun's picture with a target on it," Risebrough said. "I heard lots of comments about how they were going to get Jamie Macoun, so I say that's premeditated."

Koharski handed out a total of 147 penalty minutes in the brawl, 75 to Calgary and 72 to Buffalo. The breakdown included five five-minute fighting majors and five game misconducts to Calgary and a minor, four fighting majors and five game misconducts to the Sabres. There were only 38 minutes in penalties after the first period.

A total of 33 penalties were meted out during the game, which took 3 hours and nine minutes to play.

During the wild night, the Flames lost right wing Tim Hunter. Hunter suffered a broken ankle in the first-period brawl and will be lost to the club for several weeks. He received a fighting major and a game misconduct.

On the Buffalo side, coach Rick Dudley saw the grudge match differently. He said he didn't think media or the Macoun incident had anything to do with the brawl.

"It had to do with sticks being swung and frustration," Dudley said.

Gary Roberts had a goal in each of the second and third periods as the Flames snapped a four-game losing streak. Mark Osiecki and Doug Gilmour scored second-period goals for the Flames.

Colin Patterson and Dave Snuggerud scored for the Sabres, both in the second period.

The loss extended the Sabres' winless streak to seven games (0-5-2), their longest of the season.

Devils 2, Flyers 2

Stephane Richer and Kevin Todd scored goals in the final five minutes to give the Devils a tie with the Flyers.

The tie was the second in as many nights for the Devils, who played to a 2-2 tie with Detroit Saturday night. The Flyers are unbeaten in their last four games at home with New Jersey (1-0-3). The Flyers still have only one victory against Patrick Division opponents (1-10-3).

The Flyers had led on a first-period goal by Pelle Eklund on the power play and a goal by Kerry Huffman early in the third period.

Rangers 4, Bruins 0

Mike Richter recorded the Rangers' first shutout of the Bruins in more than 22 years, stopping 30 shots.

Jets 4, Capitals 3

Defenseman Teppo Numminen scored at 15:17 of the third period to lead Winnipeg over the Capitals as the Jets extended their unbeaten string to 10 games.
