Alpine residents tend to be home-oriented. According to CACI marketing research, Alpine residents make more home improvements than the national average and choose to eat at home more than travel to restaurants. Residents are more likely to own pets, purchase sporting goods and buy furniture. They also tend to make more investments, to take out more loans and to spend less money on apparel and shoes.
"There is nothing big about Alpine, but everybody that lives here likes it," said lifelong resident and City Councilman Robert Smith. "That's one of the things that has caused our land values to escalate."The average income for Alpine families is $40,800, and the average monthly house payment is $540. Almost 90 percent of homes in the community are owned by the residents. Only 11 percent rent their homes.
Alpine is a typical Utah bedroom community. The average travel time to work is 31.8 minutes. More than 91 percent of registered voters voted in the last presidential election, 89 percent of those voted Republican.
Origin of city's name
Settled by cattlemen W.H. Hooper, Quincy Knowlton and George M. Burgess in the fall of 1850, the community was originally called Fort Wordsworth, after William S. Wordsworth. It was later named Dry Creek Settlement and Mountainville. The name was changed to Alpine at the time of incorporation because the area reminded Brigham Young of the Swiss Alps.
