Utah weather highlights

Nov. 3: A record-setting cold morning in several areas. Logan, 4, previously 14 in 1967; Vernal, 3, previously 8, 1967; Bryce Canyon, 1, previously 7, 1970; and Spanish Fork, 10, perviously 13, 1936.

Nov 13-16: Rather vigorous storm system moved through entire state, producing snow in many areas and with main snow level around 4,700-5,000 feet. Some impressive snowfall amounts: Enterprise, 18-20 inches; Brian Head, 14; Bryce Canyon, 26; and Alta, 15. Water amounts, in inches: Capitol Reef, 1.59; Blanding, 1.47; Tooele, 1.42; Brian Head, 1.10; Monticello, 1.83; and Stansbury Park, 1.21. Canyon winds blew the morning of the 15th to 76 mph in Centerville, 70 on the Bountiful bench and 62 mph at Hill Air Force Base. The winds caused an empty 53-foot semitrailer truck to overturn in the Centerville area.

Nov. 17-19: Another is a series of storms with lots of snow and water. Thunder and snow pellets were seen. Snowfall amounts, in inches: Alta, 32; Park City, 21; Brighton, 27; Snowbird, 29; and Solitude, 28. Water numbers, in inches: Alta, 3.00; Brighton, 2.10; Olympus Cove, 1.00; Spanish Fork, 1.01; Provo-BYU, 0.94; and Midway, 0.97.

Nov. 20-22: The dreaded "lake effect" kicked in, enhancing snowfall in Tooele, Salt Lake and Utah counties. On the morning of the 22nd, I-15, was "bad news" from Utah County northward into the southern part of the Salt Lake Valley. Snowfall amounts in inches: Alta, 27; Solitude, 20; Midway, Riverton and Lehi, 6; and American Fork, 5. Water amounts, in inches; Snowbird, 1.76; Alta, 2.23; Brighton, 1.50; Centerville, 0.39; Sandy, 0.44; and Wellsville, 0.37.

Some November precipitation totals: Alta, 12.02 (194 percent of normal); Midway, 2.51 (114 percent); Ogden-Pioneer, 2.28 (132 percent); Provo-BYU, 2.63 (170 percent); Salt Lake City, 2.17 (178 percent); Tooele, 4.68 (327 percent); and Zion National Park, 1.00 (83 percent).
