Burns are the leading cause of death in children under 14, say officials at the University Intermountain Burn Center.

Feb. 4-10 is National Burn Awareness Week. More than 2 million people sustain burn injuries each year.Officials suggest turning residential hot water heaters below 130 degrees, as even 140-degree water can cause severe burns in just five seconds. Parents should child-proof bathroom and kitchens and test microwave-heated foods before serving them to a child. Other common-sense tips include supervising children around matches, lighters, barbecues, campfires, fireworks and flammable liquids.
