Police have recovered a Caravaggio painting that was stolen 17 years ago from an abbey in Turin, authorities said Saturday.

Police said the work, depicting the crucifixion of St. Peter, was found Friday night in a goldsmith's storeroom in this northern Italian city. The painting, which experts date from the early 1600s, is reportedly valued at nearly $1 million.Police said the storeroom's owner, who was not named, had previously been convicted of receiving stolen artistic objects.
