Nine-year-old Justin Hunt will be recognized by the Salt Lake County Fire Department Tuesday for his quick reaction that saved his mother's life and his own when their house caught fire.
Colleen Bangerter, Utah's first lady, and Lt. Gov. Val Oveson are expected to attend the presentation at 1 p.m. in Sandy Elementary School, 8725 S. 280 East.Hunt had attended a county-sponsored fire prevention program at the school one day before a fire broke out in his home while he and his mother were sleeping. Instead of opening his bedroom door when he saw smoke coming through, he crawled across the bedroom floor and jumped out the window and ran barefoot around to a safe entrance to the house. He then banged on his mother's door yelling "fire, fire, fire" and then went to the neighbors and called 911 after making sure she was awake.
