A project that could be called "the paws that expresses" decorates the foyer inside the entranceway of Whittier Elementary. The school's 800 students each "gave a hand" to the project, making a red, white or blue hand to create a king-sized flag. A picture of each of the students appears on the hands, making a personal statement about the school's universal feeling of patriotism at a time when the United States is at war. The flag attracts the attention of students and visitors, said Shannon Nishi, spokeswoman.
