The Utah division of the American Cancer Society has received two national Gold Awards, one for raising $1,424,756 - an increase of nearly 31 percent over last year. Utah is one of seven states that increased fund raising by at least 15 percent.

The other award lauded the division's public education program. The Utah division has claimed Gold Awards for its educational efforts for three years.The American Cancer Society is funding $1.4 million in cancer research at the University of Utah and Brigham Young University, said Paul Dorius, chairman of the division's Crusade Committee. Utah funds support local programs of research, public and professional education, and service to cancer patients and families.

Since 1946, 25 Nobel prize winners have been medical researchers supported by the American Cancer Society, including 1990 winner Donnal E. Thomas.
