Several activities will highlight Utah's observance of Celebrate Reading Week, Friday, March 1, through Thursday, March 7.
The Utah Council of the International Reading Association began a conference Thursday, Feb. 28, that will continue through Saturday, March 2. Meetings are being held in the Red Lion Inn.Keynote speaker for a Friday evening banquet will be Lyndon W. Searfoss, Arizona State University. He is author of a reading program widely used in Utah. Roger Farr, professor at Indiana University and senior author for Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, will speak at a Saturday morning general session. Bernard Waber, author of "Ira Sleeps Over" and other popular children's books, will speak at a lunch Saturday.
Thursday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m., singing and storytelling will be offered to children and parents.
Wasatch Front Literacy Volunteers of America will hold literacy events in the Crossroads Plaza Friday, March 1, through Saturday, March 9.
Workshops will be presented by Roy Bartoo, co-founder of Catskill Whole Language Conference; Dot Warnecke and Ulla Sponbeck, both author/teachers.
The Deseret News will conduct several activities, including a readathon and a puzzle chase.
Teachers in Jordan, Granite and Salt Lake school districts may receive continuing education credit for the workshops.
