Greg Hayes, a Highland High School teacher, has been elected president of the newly chartered Utah Chapter, American Federation of Teachers.
He formerly was president of the Salt Lake unit of the organization. His ambition, he said, is to "assist AFT toward promoting progressive change that will bring benefit to the entire community and not as a short-sighted special interest group with unjustified demands on the public purse."Hayes has waged a campaign to encourage legislators to visit classrooms as substitute teachers, and also has involved his school students in a legislative push to tighten laws regarding the chemicals from which illicit drugs are manufactured. He will serve a two-year term as AFT president.
