Rocco Mediate shot a 6-under-par 66 Thursday to tie Chip Beck, Keith Clearwater and Jim Hallett for the first-round lead of the $1.4 million Doral Open.

The four share a one-stroke lead over seven players at 5-under-par 67 over the par 72, 6,939-yard Doral "Blue Monster" course.Tied a stroke back were 1990 player of the year Wayne Levi, Mark O'Meara, Dan Forsman, Tom Purtzer, Billy Ray Brown, Bill Glasson and Greg Cerulli.

Defending champion Greg Norman shot a 71 and Seve Ballesteros made his 1991 debut on the Tour with an opening-round 75.

Clearwater, of Orem, played in heavy rain for three holes but managed seven birdies and only one bogey.

The bogey came on the par-5 10th as the rain started. He missed the green to the right, chipped to 10 feet, but two-putted for bogey.

Clearwater, whose only two tour wins came in 1987, said he is happy with his year so far, although he is 49th on the money list.

"I've been playing very well all year - I've made six cuts," he said. "But I haven't played very well on the weekends."
