Notre Dame's Raghib Ismail lost for the first time in his collegiate track careeer when he was edged at the finish of the men's 55-meter dash by Nigeria's Augustine Olobia of Washington State. Olobia won in 6.17 seconds. Frank Fredericks of BYU was third with a time of 6.19.
Maicel Malone of Arizona State smashed American, collegiate and meet records in winning the 400-meter dash in 51.05 seconds at the NCAA Track and Field Championships.Malone was unchallenged on her way to breaking the American mark of 51.77 set by Diane Dixon in Budapest in 1989.
Malone also bettered the collegiate mark of 51.90.
Nebraska's Ximena Restrepo of Columbia was second in 52.12 and Texas' Sandie Richards of Jamaica was third in 52.83.
LSU led the women's competition with 36 points after 10 events. Texas, which has alternated with LSU in winning the team title the last four years, was second with 30 points. Villanova was third with 25.
Defending men's champion Arkansas, after its eighth straight title, was struggling after 11 events. The Razorbacks were tied for sixth with 12 points. Washington State led with 26 points, followed by Indiana with 20 and Georgetown with 17.
Indiana's Bob Kennedy won the mile in 3 minutes, 58.11 seconds. Kennedy overtook leader Bill Burke of Princeton on the backstretch in the final lap.
