One of former East Germany's top spies was charged Monday with running an espionage network channeling Western secrets to East Berlin with the help of a train conductor, prosecutors said.

Harry Schuett, from 1977 to 1990 head of the section of East Berlin's secret service for penetrating West German intelligence, was charged in a Munich court with a former subordinate named only as Guenter B.Schuett, a major general in the hated Stasi state security organization, is accused of paying an employee of West Germany's BND secret service $165,000 for providing classified documents for 16 years until 1988.
