The State Department said Monday Americans face a lessened security threat abroad because of the cessation of hostilities in the Persian Gulf, but officials nevertheless urged travelers to exercise caution.

"Although a cease-fire is in place, tensions still remain in many parts of the (Middle East, Africa and South Asia) area," the department said in a travel advisory."Americans traveling throughout the region should continue to exercise caution and, in particular, avoid any demonstrations which may occur," the department said.
